I met Ivan one night in a Montreal bar and we had a great chat, he was such a nice guy. There's lots of MWH material I wasn't fond of, despite how much I generally liked the band, and lots of Box songs I did like, especially on their first album (Live on TV, Must I Always Remember, etc), but the Hats had an edge I simply preferred. Fair enough, I guess it's simply a matter of personal taste. Jean-Marc Pisapia is back at it as 'The Box' too, although a whole new set of backing musicians, and Sass Jordan is nowhere to be found. I've never seen either band live, but I still prefer The Box's quirky songwriting over MWH's quirky songwriting, but that's just me. There are some gems on the albums that followed (Folk of The 80's Part III, Pop Goes the World, Sideways), but it's one of those love em or hate em bands. Rhythm of Youth (1982) - a synth-pop masterpiece, imo, and Safety Dance is 'not' the best song on there, just their most popular. Freeways EP (Antarctica, Security, Modern Dancing, etc) - this was a mid-80's reissue of the original Folk of the 80's EP released in 1980. If interested, some of their stuff to check out: Men Without Hats, they were really a great band, very different and unique, perhaps too much for the mainstream to grasp at the time. A touch of portamento believe it or not will get you even closer (yup). Their videos were quite conceptual and at first threw me off, then realizing Tim Pope directed many of them, I got it.Īs for sounds uses, they did use the Synclavier quite a bit, as well as the Prophet-5 and the Yamaha CS-XX (one of those), if you can program a synth, you can even replicate that sound in Reason's subtractor, beef it up with the Scream and creative use of delay, you'll see how it's not that hard. The hats were quirky, strange synth lines, but also had attitude and could be as rock and roll as anyone else. As for The Box, yeah, they were cool, cute songs, very pop, but seeing them live followed by Men Without Hats in 1985, there was no contest, Ivan and MWH had a charisma and presence on stage the Box couldn't even come close to. I grew up in Montreal and was quite the Hat fan, they were huge back then and have a rather extensive catalog of excellent material, sadly, it never got properly promoted and they unfairly went down the 'one-hit highway'. Retrieved 12 December 2019.I did a spec remix of Safety Dance about 5 years ago and sent it off to them, it was more of a breakbeat version using some of the orginal snippets, inlcuding the octave bleep.
